This week we are publishing a new issue of our print magazine.

Here is the editorial of this sixth issue, which you can already order by clicking here.

Ukraine, Mali, Burkina Faso: international news has been particularly busy in recent weeks. And that is without counting the presidential election in France, which should have repercussions on the major geopolitical issues of the coming months.

For while immigration is once again at the centre of the debate, defence and security, themes dear to Défense Zone, are regaining a central place in the candidates’ programmes. Abolishing the anti-crime brigade, increasing the armed forces’ budget, returning to community policing, leaving NATO...: the contenders for the highest office in the State have made many promises, some of which could have major repercussions on our daily lives and on the future of our country’s armed and security forces.

While we await the verdict of 28 April, we set off on a new issue of Défense Zone whose main feature is devoted to a soon-to-be bicentenary institution of the French Army: the French Foreign Legion.

This unit of 9,000 men from around 150 different countries has taken part in every battle and every war fought by France since it was created by King Louis-Philippe in 1831.

Indeed, two days after the coming presidential election, legionnaires will celebrate Camerone, a founding feat of arms for the institution, which we detail on page 29.

We then board the famous aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, the spearhead of the French Navy, before heading for Djibouti and its French air base.

Our journey abroad continues in Belize, for an immersion with the British armed forces and their jungle school.

But before setting off, are you sure you have packed the right bag? To help you make the best choice, our lessons-learned (RETEX) section helps you choose your backpack according to the length and type of mission or activity.

This sixth issue is also an opportunity to shine a light on the CBRN unit of the Paris Fire Brigade and to explain the recruitment process for intelligence officers at the DGSE.

Finally, we meet Alex French SAS, a former special forces member turned entrepreneur.
