Editorial of supplement #5, July 2023
As we find ourselves in the midst of the age of digitisation and interconnectivity, the modern battlefield is changing at an unprecedented pace. Heir to the telegraph sapper units, “the arm that unites the arms” was created in 1942. The French Army’s 7 signals regiments operate the information and communication systems that ensure orders and intelligence are transmitted properly, and thus contribute greatly to the success of air-land manoeuvres. In this Pro supplement, we take the subject of data transmission in the broad sense to discuss the information and communication technologies (ICT) that have taken on a predominant role in theatres of operations, profoundly changing the doctrines for employing equipment and people.
Digitisation has placed data at the heart of military strategy, linking the three services more than ever. This has enabled a comprehensive approach to warfare, paving the way for so-called network-centric operations. The reading of the terrain is thus better shared and the collaboration of capabilities is optimised.
However, this digitisation is not without consequences. With the explosion in data volumes and their dematerialisation, the risk of espionage has increased considerably. Faced with this threat, encryption is an effective solution for protecting sensitive data. Quantum technology represents a major turning point in the field of cryptography, making the current data protection system obsolete. The algorithms used today could not withstand such computing power.
Furthermore, satellite telecommunications play a crucial role in defence, offering global reach, resilience to terrestrial disruption and rapid deployment capability. The forthcoming launch into orbit of a French military telecommunications satellite will implement the first laser optical link. This emerging technology offers a promising alternative, with higher data transmission capacity and enhanced security.
