On 26 September, several explosions caused four huge leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines linking Russia to Germany. A deftly executed operation which, in the view of many European political leaders, can only be the work of a state. At the time, Western eyes immediately turned to Russia. Yet it was hardly a credible suspect. The two pipelines are used to export Russian gas to Europe, so they are a source of revenue and an essential means of leverage for Moscow. Last February, the affair took its first twist. Seymour Hersh, an internationally renowned American investigative journalist, accused the US secret services. More recently, the German judicial investigation and the US services pointed to an entirely different suspect: a “pro-Ukrainian group”.
