Women make up 17.3% of French military personnel (compared with 15.8% in 2019) and 22.7% of the ministry’s workforce including civilian staff, making the French military one of the most feminised in Europe, well ahead of Germany (10%). But the average hides considerable gaps: 62.8% women in the medical service, 24.3% in the French Air and Space Force, 16.7% in the Navy… and 11.7% in the French Army. A factual overview, far from both press releases and caricatures.
What has changed
All military jobs are open to women, including submarines and special forces, and progress has been steady for twenty years, as documented by the ministry’s social reports. A new gender diversity plan for military personnel has been announced for 2026, following the 2025-2027 professional equality agreement signed for civilian staff. France also stands out internationally: few European armed forces do better in proportional terms.
What resists: the combat arms and the top
Two ceilings remain. The first is sectoral: the proportion of women remains very low in close combat units (infantry, armour), and the French Army plateaus at 11.7%, with physical requirements, self-selection and unit culture all playing a part. The second is hierarchical: women remain very rare among general officers, a point regularly highlighted by the specialist press. This is mechanically linked to the talent pools of thirty years ago, but not only: the qualifying career paths (operational commands, war colleges) remain statistically less feminised.
Daily life: beyond the percentages
On the ground, the practical issues are well known to those concerned: equipment and infrastructure long designed for men, balancing family life in a profession of postings and operational absences, and tackling sexist and sexual violence, for which the ministry has strengthened its reporting units. These are all subjects we document in our embedded reports, where women serve as pilots, mechanics, commandos and military doctors.
