“The first casualty of war is always the truth” (Rudyard Kipling)
Why did we create Défense Zone magazine?
At a time when print journalism is dying, overwhelmed by 24-hour news channels, social media and the internet more broadly, we chose to believe that there is still a fight to be fought.
Passionate about reporting and photography, we cannot imagine a world without quality print magazines, which highlight what deserves to be highlighted and which you can touch, share and collect.
Beyond the object itself, which for us and for many others still holds undeniable value, the content we offer you matters even more.
Each issue of Défense Zone magazine is an invitation to travel, to analysis, and to constructive and relevant criticism of our society, our politicians and our institutions.

Reading the press is both a right and a duty.
The right to access reliable, independent information.
But also a duty to keep informed, to make the effort to try to understand the world we live in, in order to make the right choices, especially when we are called to the polls or have to take decisions for ourselves and our families.
Whether we like it or not, we are all involved in a communication war, a war that cannot find peace, so immense are the geopolitical and economic stakes.
One could go further and say that conflict is inherent in the building of a society, or even of a human being.
With this in mind, we have no choice but to arm ourselves with knowledge and critical thinking if we do not want to become collateral victims of this communication war.

“Knowledge is power”
To help you broaden your general knowledge and better understand the major defence and security issues, we offer in-depth articles in the form of profiles, interviews and major features.
We take you with us directly into the field, on overseas operations (OPEX) as in issue 3 of our magazine, when we were in the Sahel to cover Operation Barkhane, or more recently behind the scenes of the mysterious French Foreign Legion.
All our back issues are available to buy individually on our website.
Some are out of stock or nearly so, so head here to get hold of your copies.
Staying free
In a communication war, the hardest thing is to stay free and not be taken in by fake news and the manipulation of spin doctors.
For communication is indeed “a weapon of mass persuasion”, as an officer recently interviewed on our podcast conceded, “a weapon that makes it possible to get messages across, to convince, to explain, and potentially to turn minds for operational purposes”.
For our part, we belong to no political camp and we are funded neither by the State nor by its institutions.
Défense Zone is a team of professional journalists working in complete independence on subjects that interest you and that will help you understand national and international news.
For you, we go into the field, we cross-check sources and we give a voice to the players in the sector, while taking the time to simplify and explain, without falling into sensationalism.

We are not here to sell “available brain time”, as a former head of TF1 once put it.
Our only mission is to arm intelligent readers who want to be better informed.
No soldier would want to go into combat without the key information from a pre-mission briefing.
