Book review: “L’Art de la guerre” (The Art of War), by Sun Tzu

Lecture : « L'Art de la guerre », de Sun Tzu defense-zone.com

Some 2,500 years old, L’Art de la guerre (The Art of War), attributed to Sun Tzu, is the oldest known treatise on strategy — and probably the most quoted out of context. Behind the aphorisms recycled for management, it is a text of undiminished depth, studied in every military academy in the world.

What is the book about?

Thirteen short chapters — assessment, conduct of operations, terrain, espionage… — organised around one central idea: the height of skill is not to win a hundred battles, but to subdue the enemy without fighting. Everything flows from intelligence, deception (“all warfare is based on deception”), economy of force and exploiting the adversary’s dispositions. Where Clausewitz thinks about confrontation, Sun Tzu thinks about circumvention.

What is its context?

The text was born in China during the Warring States period, a laboratory of incessant wars between rival states. Its relevance is striking: contemporary hybrid strategies — disinformation, economic coercion, victory without crossing the threshold of open war — are Sun Tzu applied, and current Chinese doctrines explicitly claim his legacy. Reading it also means reading Beijing’s strategic grammar.

Why read it?

Because in an hour’s reading you acquire analytical reflexes that apply from the battlefield to the negotiating table: know your adversary and know yourself, attack the enemy’s strategy before its armies, only give battle once it is already won. The collector’s edition available in the bookshop adds a biography and a selection of quotations — handy for discovering the full text beyond the extracts.

Who was Sun Tzu?

Tradition makes him a general of the kingdom of Wu, active around the 6th–5th century BC; historians debate whether he even existed, some seeing the treatise as the compilation of a school of strategy. In the end it hardly matters: the text itself has an attested history of more than two millennia, commented on by Chinese strategists, translated in Europe as early as the 18th century — and never off the shelves of general staffs.
