French snipers will soon be equipped with FN Herstal’s Elity ballistic calculators

The ballistic calculator had been tested for several months by soldiers of the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment (3e RIMa) under the supervision of the Army Battle Lab and the French Army Technical Section (STAT). They seem to have been satisfied with it, since FN Herstal has just announced “a first major order for its FN Elity ballistic calculators [...] intended for French snipers and designated marksmen”.

In early 2022, the Army Battle Lab (BLT) acquired a first batch of FN Elity and launched an exploratory phase with the soldiers of the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment. The ballistic calculator was thus evaluated on two different weapons: 12.7 mm rifles and 7.62 mm precision rifles (PGM and FN SCAR-H PR). These tests showed that the calculator “significantly improves the shooter’s performance, reduces the detection-to-neutralisation time by 40% and increases shooting accuracy by 25%. It also lightens the equipment carried by snipers by 6 kilos”, the Belgian manufacturer states in its press release.

“This first innovation project carried out with FN Herstal went particularly well, thanks in particular to the excellent collaboration between the Army Battle Lab and the Belgian gunmaker. It ends on a high note, since it demonstrates the system’s effectiveness and leads to the acquisition of an initial capability for the French forces. It thus opens the door to the acquisition of a full capability, whose terms and timing remain to be defined, and to further collaboration with FN Herstal”, explains Squadron Leader (chef d’escadron) Tanguy de Brosse, in charge of the project at the Army Battle Lab.
