German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall announced on Friday 12 May that it would set up a joint venture with Ukrainian state-owned company Ukroboronprom to repair military vehicles in Ukraine, before moving on to direct production there.

The joint venture is expected to be operational from mid-July, and the first stage will consist of military vehicle repair activities. In later phases, the cooperation will focus on the joint manufacture of certain Rheinmetall products in Ukraine on the basis of a full technology transfer. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said the group aimed “to meet [Ukraine’s] urgent needs as quickly as possible”. As the German government is one of the main providers of military aid among Ukraine’s allies, it also supplies weapons and ammunition made by Rheinmetall, such as the Leopard heavy tanks that recently arrived on the battlefield against Russia. This new joint venture could also pave the way for the joint development of new military systems in Ukraine for export abroad.
