On Tuesday 7 February 2023, NATO’s “Data and Artificial Intelligence Review Board” (DARB) met to launch the development of a user-friendly certification standard for responsible artificial intelligence (AI). This standard aims to help the Alliance’s industries and institutions ensure that new AI and data projects comply with international law as well as with NATO’s norms and values.

This advisory board, which will also be tasked with developing a standard for the use of data in the defence field, is expected to complete its mission by the end of the year. It will build on the principles of responsible use of AI (approved in October 2021 as part of NATO’s first AI strategy) to turn them into a “practical standard, notably in terms of governability, traceability and reliability”, NATO’s press release states.

The Board is made up of representatives of NATO member countries, invitees Finland and Sweden, and experts on the subject. The representatives include lawyers, engineers, military personnel and ethics experts. The board will also serve as a single platform for exchanging best practice and guiding innovators and operational users throughout the development phase. Its work will make a positive contribution to NATO’s digital transformation. NATO is currently piloting AI in areas as diverse as cyber defence, climate change and imagery analysis.
