At the Royal International Air Tattoo, the largest international air show, currently being held at Fairford, west of London, the Minister of State for Defence Procurement, Jeremy Quin, announced an investment of £2.35 billion (€2.76 billion) in upgrading the Royal Air Force’s Eurofighter Typhoons.
The installation of the next-generation ECRS Mk2 radar (for European Common Radar System) is the most significant part of this upgrade. In particular, it will make it possible to “suppress enemy air defences using high-powered jamming and engage targets while remaining out of range of threats”, the Ministry of Defence says with satisfaction. This project, launched in September 2020 with the award of a £317 million contract to BAE Systems and Leonardo to develop this radar, “will maintain the cutting-edge capabilities of the Eurofighter Typhoon and help underpin the development path towards the Future Combat Air System”, says Jeremy Quin.
In addition to replacing the radar, this upgrade programme also includes the installation of an improved navigation system and the latest on-board computer and cockpit interface technologies.
The British Ministry of Defence adds that “the ECRS Mk2 will enter service towards the end of the decade”.
