On 29 December 2022, the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) ordered 50 renovated Leclerc tanks (XLR) from Nexter. The industrial qualification trials are being carried out in close collaboration with the DGA and the French Army’s Technical Section. “A first prototype tank was delivered to the DGA at the end of 2022, and the first 18 production vehicles will be delivered to the French Army in 2023, in line with the schedule of the renovation contract awarded to Nexter on 1 June 2021”, Nexter states in its press release.
The main aim of this renovation is to integrate the so-called “XLR” Leclerc tank into the SCORPION info-enhanced bubble by fitting it with the SCORPION combat information system (SICS), the CONTACT radio and the vetronics common to the programme’s vehicles. The tank’s protection and offensive capability have also been improved through reinforced protection against mines and rockets, the addition of a 7.62 mm remote-controlled turret for urban combat and the development of a new fire control system able to fire programmable-effect or programmable-fuze ammunition.
