Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently revealed ongoing negotiations with British manufacturer BAE Systems with a view to setting up an arms production plant in Kyiv.

According to Zelensky’s statements, this plant would allow the local manufacture of a wide range of weapons, including tanks and artillery systems. He stressed the importance of having a large-scale arms manufacturer to guarantee the security of the country and the region in the future.

The two parties have reportedly agreed to start by opening a BAE Systems office in the country. Once this first step has been completed, the British company will immediately set about creating and operating local repair and production facilities.

Charles Woodburn, chief executive of BAE Systems, said he was honoured to take part in these discussions and to be able to provide increased support to Ukraine. He also stressed the British company’s commitment to helping the Ukrainian government revitalise its defence industrial base, thereby guaranteeing long-term security for the country.
