Safran’s Australian branch will supply more than a hundred JIM Compact multifunction infrared binoculars to the snipers of the Australian armed forces.

The contract, whose value has not been disclosed, was awarded by NIOA, prime contractor for the LAND 159 programme, which aims to “improve sniper and close-combat capabilities” by replacing weapon systems “in service for decades in the Australian Defence Force”, NIOA says.

The JIM Compact binoculars will therefore “improve the sniper’s surveillance system capabilities, accuracy and performance across a wide range of environments, by day and by night”, Safran states in its press release.

Weighing less than two kilos, these compact and rugged binoculars combine a high-resolution cooled infrared channel for longer ranges, a high-resolution day channel, a laser rangefinder and advanced image stabilisation processing, and offer extensive communication options to feed data and images to the sniper’s other equipment. They also feature a “Long-Range Sniper” function (TELD) that limits the “user’s cognitive load” when “carrying out lead calculations”, which according to Safran makes it possible “to engage a moving target very quickly”.

Patrice Provost, President of Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia, said: “Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia is proud to supply JIM Compact binoculars to the Australian armed forces. We are grateful for the trust NIOA has shown in selecting us after an international tender process, and look forward to working with NIOA and the Australian Defence Force”.

With this contract, Safran expands its market share in Australia, “with more than 250 units already sold”. The JIM Compact has also been selected for the special forces, forward observers and forward air controllers of the Australian armed forces, under the LAND 17 programme.
