Thales and LuxCarta have decided to work together to offer improved military intelligence and mapping solutions through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). LuxCarta is a company specialising in geospatial products derived from satellite imagery. This agreement formalises an informal partnership that has existed between the two companies since 2020.
In military planning, obtaining accurate geospatial data quickly is essential to support operational decision-making. With this agreement, Thales and LuxCarta aim to meet that need. Thales is recognised for its expertise in producing military maps and intelligence, with in-depth knowledge of the technical standards specific to the military sector. The group supports the armed forces by creating accurate, reliable maps from scanned and vectorised satellite images. LuxCarta, for its part, is a leader in AI for developing geospatial solutions through its BrightEarth platform. The company produces very large-scale mapping data in a very short time to meet the needs of its civilian markets.
Thanks to this partnership, Thales can transfer this expertise to the defence sector and integrate it into its map production chains and military intelligence systems. For military mapping and intelligence, AI is particularly useful for photo interpretation. It automatically detects, interprets and digitises buildings, road networks, obstacles, vehicles and so on. By automating certain repetitive tasks, AI saves time in map production and allows teams to focus on high-value activities.
“LuxCarta provides state-of-the-art AI-based geospatial products that very quickly generate results useful to our military intelligence and mapping activities”, explains Eric Aubineau, Director of the Intelligence Systems and Imagery department, Thales. “This partnership is the culmination of our effective collaboration over several years.”
“It is very rewarding to see our partner Thales successfully extend our work on automating the extraction of data from satellite imagery”, says Albéric Maumy, CEO of LuxCarta. “We are pleased to help optimise the production of mapping information by contributing our intelligent detection capabilities.”
